Laidlaw College turns 100!
Founded in 1922 by a group of Christian church, business, and community leaders, the College has a long history of forming leaders for all walks of life. Graduates of the College have entered Parliament, worked in humanitarian aid, established social enterprises, and served as teachers, counsellors, pastors, and in countless other forms of community renewal.
In 2008, the College took on the name of one of the founding trustees and longest-serving board Chair, Robert Laidlaw – the entrepreneurial founder of Farmers department stores, and an innovative religious and community leader. Laidlaw’s life exemplifies the College’s mission “to equip students and scholars to renew their communities with a faith as intelligent as it is courageous”, and is just one of the many connected stories of impact in Aotearoa and the world.
National Principal, Dr Roshan Allpress says,
“It is remarkable to look back across a hundred years and see the immense impact of our graduates – transforming lives and serving their communities in churches, Government, marae, classrooms, counselling rooms, and bringing hope and renewal in incalculable other unsung ways. Laidlaw College is much more than just the community who come in to study, teach and research in any given year, and we are looking forward to the next hundred years.”
Laidlaw College equips established and emerging leaders across programmes in Counselling, Theology, Teacher Education and Christian Leadership, with campuses in Auckland and Christchurch, and students studying via distance and partnerships across Aotearoa and beyond.
